More and more, joggers are being used for activities besides jogging. Many parents take them around the neighborhood, in the mall, jogging in the park, running on dirt trails and more. They are versatile and can go a variety of places, but it is important that you consider what activities you will be doing most frequently with your jogging stroller, so that you can pick one that will match your lifestyle. It is also important to note that it is not recommended to jog with babies under 6 months of age, as they have not yet developed the necessary muscles to support their heads and neck on their own. There are some models from brands such as Schwinn, InStep and Baby Trend that manufacturer some of their joggers to accommodate an infant car seat, in which case the infant car seat will offer the child the necessary support. With the necessary support, these joggers can be used as walking strollers for your infant; however, it is still not recommended to jog with an infant under 6 months of age.
When selecting a jogging stroller, the wheel size is one of the first things that you want to consider. There are 3 standard wheel sizes that you will find amongst today’s joggers-- 12” wheels, 16” wheels or 20” wheels. In general, the larger the wheel, the smoother the ride will be when your running. If you are a serious runner or you are looking to use your jogger off-road, 20” wheels will offer a smoother ride, less resistance and easier handling over rough terrain. If you are planning to frequently jog or walk fast, but aren’t really planning on trekking over rough terrain, 16” wheels will be perfect for you. 16” wheels perform great of dirt paths, glide smoothly and are easy to maneuver for those who aren’t trekking over rough terrain. For those parents who are planning on the occasional slow jog, but plan on spending most of their time indoors, walking around, 12” wheels are preferable. The smaller 12” wheels will make maneuvering around -- especially in crowded indoor settings -- much easier than their larger counterparts. Smaller wheels will also mean a less bulky stroller for easier storage.
In addition to the wheel size, you are going to have to choose between a fixed wheel and a swivel wheel models. Swivel Wheel Jogging Strollers are relatively new to the stroller industry. The front wheel of a swivel wheel jogger will swivel, but there is also an option to lock the front wheel to avoid the swivel action. The front swivel wheel is ideal for indoor use -- especially in crowded spaces -- because it is easy to turn and maneuver. It is not, however, advised to use a swivel wheel jogging stroller for heavy running. Even when the wheel is locked, there can be some wiggle, and many runners will have difficulty keeping their strollers tracking straight. If you’re a serious runner, you should consider a Fixed Wheel Jogging Stroller. Fixed wheel models are the original, and they are built for running. If, however, you’re looking to take you’re jogger into the mall, store or other crowded areas, a fixed wheel model is not the ideal choice for many. In order to turn a fixed wheel jogging stroller, you will have to push down on the back of the stroller and lift up the front tire. Before, choosing a jogger, consider which type of wheel is ideal for your lifestyle.
